What is The Chill SBC Soccer Club?
The Chill SBC Soccer Club is a premier level soccer club based in East Lansing, MI. The club at present has girls and boys teams ranging from U9 to U18 and is the only club in the area that only employs full time professional coaches. The club uses a proven curriculum for player development which sees players work on a different technique and tactic each week in training. The curriculum has been developed with the assistance of a number of experienced staff from Chicago Fire Camps and Training. The club also utilizes a specific type of coaching called Strengths Based Coaching (SBC). SBC was developed from early psychology studies in the area of positive reinforcement and believes that players flourish when taught in a positive psychological environment.
Philosophically, the club believes in creating a positive psychological training environment which is physically and mentally challenging with the aim of lifting players beyond their vision of capability.
What is SBC?
Strengths-Based Coaching (SBC) is an approach to coaching. It is the core or the very foundation of coaching, set firm in the belief that the how of coaching (the process) is more essential than the what of coaching (the information delivered). SBC is about the how of coaching. SBC believes that coaches must get the how of coaching or the approach down in order to most effectively deliver the what. SBC is built on the science and principles of positive psychology and an extensively researched model of human interaction.
SBC operates from the point of view that every individual has a natural set of talents. Those talents, when combined with knowledge and skill in the right climate – a positive psychological climate – develop into strength. A Strengths-Based Coach is one who can identify the natural talents of individuals and then deliver the right mix of knowledge and skill to build strength. A Strengths-Based Coach knows his/her players and activates their abilities with praise, encouragement and constructive feedback. A Strengths-Based Coach knows how to create the optimal environment that allows each player to take risks, to grow and to ultimately succeed.
What is a green card?
A green card is a tool used by a strength based coach to reward players. The reward can be soccer related (making an accurate pass, dribbling past a player, scoring a goal) or it can be socially related (helping collect cones, set up goals, picking up trash). The idea of the green card is that a player receives a tangible reward for their actions in front of their teammates. In addition to green cards during training sessions we also award green cards in our weekly newsletters and highlight players, parents or members of the community that have displayed positive modelling behaviours.
Who are the coaches?
The club’s coaching staff is made up of professional coaches employed through Chicago Fire Camps and Training and Major League Soccer Camps. All coaches are background checked and licensed through the USSF, NSCAA or the English FA. We currently have Ben Jones who serves as the club's Director of Coaching and staff coaches Stuart Greer, Robert Cheyne, Sam Ebzao, Elliott Dougall and Darren Arnott.
Eric Perilla currently serves as the clubs goalkeeper coache. Additional premier level coaches are available to serve the club as the number of teams increases.
All of our coaches are full time professionals which allow them to focus solely on developing the club and its players.
When can I start?
The youngest travel teams in the club are U9 girls and boys. Tryouts for these teams occur each year in June. For players interested in becoming involved in the club and the SBC approach earlier than this, the club runs a year round Academy for girls and boys aged 6 to 8. The Academy is staffed by the same coaches our teams enjoy. This means that Academy players are exposed to the game earlier and gain fundamental skills, game awareness and appreciation before their peers.
When do the teams train?
U9 – U12 teams will typically train 2x per week and U13 – U18 teams will train 3x per week during the spring and fall seasons.
